The North Wind And The Sun Story
A long, long time ago, the Sun and the North Wind were arguing over who was the greatest power in the universe. Everyone thought he was the strongest and most powerful person in the world. The Sun would say, “I am the most powerful because I can warm the whole world. But the North Wind argued, “I am the most powerful because I can blow up mighty ships at sea!” “I say we settle this once and for all,” the Sun said. And so the sun shone and the north wind blew as hard as it could, but neither could tell which was stronger because it was too bright and windy for either can see it.
Together they agreed that they should fix the problem with a test. Quickly, they searched for something to test their strength. Below them was a man traveling along the road through the mountains. He wore a big coat that he had buttoned up well. The Sun and the North Wind decided that the victor would be the first to be able to have the traveler take off his coat. The north wind tried its power first, blowing with all its might on the road. But the harder it blew its cold, roaring winds, the more the shivering man tightened his coat around his body.
Finally, exhausted, the North Wind gave up. The North Wind said angrily, “If I can’t do it, no one can!” It was now the Sun’s turn. The Sun gave the traveler a friendly smile, shining upon him with its light and warmth. The traveler immediately took off his coat and basked in the warm sun. The traveler looked up at the sun and smiled at the fine weather the sun had provided. And so the Sun taught the North Wind an important lesson.
