The Giant Turnip Story

Once upon a time there was an old man. He lived with his wife, a grandson, a small brown dog, a small white cat and a sweet pink-nosed mouse in a large, old farmhouse. One day the man said to his wife, “Dear wife, I am going to plant turnip seeds. When it’s nice and big, we’ll have a delicious turnip soup! He took the seed and planted it in a patch of healthy brown soil. Every day he watered it. When the lightning and thunder came, the raindrops danced on it. And when the sun shone, the rays of the sun dazzled him and kept him warm. “Make my little seed grow,” the old man used to say every day. Then one day, two small shoots appeared and grew bigger day by day. One day, the man knew it was time. “Dear woman, tonight we will eat turnip soup,” he said and put a large pot of water on to boil. He entered the garden and bent down, grabbed the shoots and started to pull. And he shot, and he shot, and he shot, but the turnip was stuck.

She called their dearest grandson. “Dear grandson, would you come and help us pull out the turnip?” So the grandson clung to the grand- mother, who helped the grandfather, who clung to the shoots and they pulled and they pulled and they pulled, but the turnip still stuck well.
