On the banks of the Ganges lived several holy men. Their leader was a man of great learning who had magical powers. One day, while he was praying by the river, a tiny mouse fell into his hand from the beak of a hawk flying overhead. The holy man was very pleased with the mouse. Since he and his wife had no children, he decided to turn the mouse into a little girl. He took the girl to his wife who was delighted to have a daughter to love and care for. “She is our daughter now. Raise her carefully,” the holy man said. Years passed and the good mouse grew into a very beautiful girl. Soon her parents decided it was time to marry her off. They wanted her to marry the greatest person in the whole world.
