The Wooden Bowl

The Wooden Bowl Story

The frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year-old grandson. The old man’s hands were trembling, his vision was clouded, his step was lost.

The family ate together every night at the dinner table. But shaking hands and the poor eyesight of the elderly grandfather made it difficult to eat. The peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he took the glass, milk was often spilled onto the tablecloth.

The son and daughter-in-law were annoyed by the disorder. “We have to do something with grandpa,” said Son. I’m sick of his spilled milk, noisy food, and food on the floor. So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner at the dinner table.

Because Grandpa had broken one or two plates, he was served food in a wooden bowl. Sometimes, when the family looked towards the grandfather, he had a tear in his eyes when he ate alone. However, the only words the couple said to him were harsh admonitions when he dropped his fork or spilled food. A four-year-old child watched all this in silence.

One evening before dinner, the father noticed that his son was playing with pieces of wood on the floor. He affectionately asked the child: “What are you doing?” Just as sweetly, the boy replied: “Oh, I am making a small bowl for you and mom, so you can eat your food when I grow up.” The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.

The parents were so struck by the words that they were speechless. Then tears began to flow down their cheeks. Although not a word was said, both knew what to do. That evening, the husband took his grandfather by the hand and carefully led him back to the family table.

For the rest of his days, he ate every meal with his family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care anymore when a fork dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth got dirty.

Children are surprisingly discerning. Their eyes are always watching, their ears are always listening, and their minds are constantly processing the messages they are assimilating.

If they see that we are patiently creating a happy home atmosphere for family members, they will emulate this attitude for the rest of their lives. The wise parent understands that building blocks are laid for the unborn child every day.
